If you are the proud owner of a septic tank, you certainly want to take care of your septic system investment.  We here at William Dustin Septic want the same for you, too. This is why our team of experts is sharing some of our septic tank wisdom today by telling you the top three septic tank mistakes we have seen in our many years of business, and how you can avoid them.

Septic tanks are a bit more sensitive than other plumbing options, and you need to be careful with what you put down your toilets. Do not flush tampons, pads, baby wipes, diapers, and toilet paper that is not specifically designed for septic tanks.  We recommend having a medium sized garbage can with a lid that seals so that you and your family have a clean and odor-free location to discard these items.

Another big mistake we commonly see with septic tank owners is when they do not act when they see signs of potential problems.  These signs can include bad smells, flooding in your yard, slow drains, and more.  If you see any of these items, call a professional immediately for an inspection.

Lastly, be sure to take good care of your drain field.  If you do not take care of your drain field, the wastewater will not filter correctly and can cause damage to your yard, your pipes, and even your home.  Have your drain field inspected by a professional a minimum of once per year.
